Welkin Bird Diverters

Welkin Bird diverters:

Bird diverters are bright, small devices mounted on power lines, which rotate as the wind blows. Transmission wires become easy to spot and, globally, research has shown bird mortality is cut by half when they are installed. “This is a welcome move. It will protect the birds and their habitats.

  • The diverters are called fireflies because they look like fireflies from a distance, shining on power lines in the night.

  • GIBs are one of the heaviest flying birds in India. Therefore, when they encounter these wires, they are unable to change the direction of their flight.

  • Death in most cases is due to the impact with the wires and not due to electrocution.

  • The diverter will not only save GIB but other species of large birds, including migratory birds.

Firefly bird diverters:

Firefly bird diverters are flaps installed on power lines. They work as reflectors for bird species like the GIB. Birds can spot them from a distance of about 50 meters and change their path of flight to avoid collision with power lines.

What is the use of Bird Diverter?

The Bird Diverters came in the highlight when the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC) and Wildlife Conservation Society introduced ‘FireFly Bird Diverters’ for overhead power lines in the areas where Great Indian Bustard (GIB) are found.

It is installed on the transmission lines which birds can spot from a distance of about 50 meters. The high voltage power lines that run through the natural habitats of GIB have become one of the reasons for their falling number as birds collide with these power cables and collapse.

Save Birds. Prevent Damage. Avoid Fines:

  • Millions of birds and bats are killed each year in collisions with power lines, guy wires, and other thin profile obstructions.
  • Utilities can be subject to large federal fines when protected species are killed.
  • Bird strikes also cause power outages.
  • Bird nests and droppings cause millions of dollars in damage each year to transformers and other electrical equipment.

The FireFly utilizes reflectance of sunlight during the daylight hours and luminescent light emission during dusk and nighttime hours. The diamond bar and luminescent material make up the main components of this product. The diamond bar material causes sunlight to become refracted during daylight hours, providing a "Sparkle Effect" which can be seen by birds and humans up to one-quarter of a mile distance.

This sparkling and refraction of light allow the bird to change their flight pattern to divert around the marked wires and avoid collisions. Luminescent material (glow in the dark) that will emit ultra-violet and visible light up to 10 hours has been added for birds to see the product in low light and fog conditions. Birds are most vulnerable to collisions with wires during sunset and sunrise hours, especially during bad weather. Nocturnal bird migrants can see the glow material both in static and active wind conditions, which causes the FireFly to rotate throughout the nighttime hours. The FireFly bird diverter is a very efficient type and is suitable for many types of installations where birds are a problem or should be protected.
